Shaping Time

Wednesday 11th - Friday 27th September 2024
Sims Reed Gallery, 43A Duke Street St James’s, London, SW1Y 6DD

Sims Reed Gallery and Oliver Projects were delighted to collaborate on a joint exhibition bringing together two contemporary artists – Coco Crampton and Joseph Goody. The show presented exciting new directions for both artists, exploring their mutual interest in playful repetition, and the relationship between words and form.

Working respectively in sculpture and painting, Coco and Joseph’s visual languages have evolved rapidly in recent months. For Coco, a move to Devon and the arrival of her first child have initiated fresh ways of working using plaster and cloth to explore storytelling. These new sculptures, which are shaped like books and heads, are painted with abstract blocks of colour.

A similarly significant shift in Joseph’s practice has also occurred in the past year. His compositions- which historically have been populated by large, abstract forms - have begun to feel dramatically different, with a greater sense of complexity. The multiple shapes inhabiting these new works explore limitations and edges, creating their own beginnings and endings

The exhibition featured new paintings by Joseph and new sculpture by Coco, alongside works on paper by both artists.

Almost Blue

Through painting, photography, printmaking and textiles, the exhibiting artists considered what this powerful colour symbolises, suggests and evokes for them.

‘Almost Blue’ included new and recent work by Royal Academicians Humphrey Ocean and Katherine Jones, Coco Crampton, Alice Macdonald, Joana Galego, Suzanne Moxhay, Joseph Goody, Robbie Fife, Guler Ates, Marianne Thygesen, R&F Mo, Rebecca Harper, Siphiwe Mnguni, RWS member Bridget Moore, and special guest artist Tom Hammick.

Drop Shadows

1st - 14th March 2024
Sims Reed Gallery, 43A Duke Street St James’s, London, SW1Y 6DD.

We were delighted to present ‘Drop Shadows’, which brought together new work by Katherine Jones RA and Temsuyanger Longkumer.

Organised in collaboration with Sims Reed Gallery, the exhibition explored the delicate — and often deceptive - minutia of the natural world, through painting, sculpture and printmaking. Despite very different upbringings in Hertfordshire and Nagaland, Katherine and Temsuyanger's respective artistic practices share an intense fascination with the subtly transformative forces of nature, and its power to represent both danger and refuge.

This was the first exhibition to present a substantial body of paintings by Katherine, who is renowned as a printmaker. These unique works were shown in dialogue with a new series of terracotta sculptures by Temsuyanger, created especially for the show.
